Week 5:  2 October to 6 October 2023

2 October 2023:

In Class:  Introduction to Energy (Chapter 1:5).

Expectations:  Students will be able to predict the direction of heat flow (given temperature), calculate temperature changes, and convert °C to K units.

Homework:  Finish the Introduction to Heat Worksheet.  Here is the Introduction to Heat Answer Key.

3 October 2023:

In Class:  Heat versus Temperature and the Phases of Matter (Chapter 1:4).

Expectations:  Students will be able to identify heat changes (endo / exothermic) and bond formation or breaking associated with phase changes.

Due:  The Introduction to Heat Worksheet.

Homework:  Finish the Characteristics of the Phases of Matter Worksheet.
Here is the Characteristics of the Phases of Matter Answer Key.

4 October 2023:

No Class:  Chemistry does not meet on Wednesday.

5 October 2023:

Lab 4:
Complete data collection and discuss Calculations for the Heat of Fusion Lab.

Expectations:  Students will be able to calculate the heat of fusion of ice based on experimental data.

Lab Report:  Pending.

6 October 2023:

In Class:  Heating and Cooling Curves (Chapter 1:8 to 1:10).  Energy Calculations (Chapter 1:5 to 1:6, 1:11 to 1:12):

  • q = m C ΔT
    q = m Hf
    q = m Hv
  • q = heatHf = heat of fusion
    m = massHv = heat of vaporization
    C = specific heat capacity
    ΔT = change in temperature
  • Expectations:  Students will be able to identify phases, phase changes, determine MP and BP, and calculate heat changes from heating and cooling curves.  Students will be able to calculate heat changes for phase changes and changes in temperature.

    Due:  The Characteristics of the Phases of Matter Worksheet.

    Homework:  Finish the Heating and Cooling Curves Worksheet.
    Here is the Heating and Cooling Curves Answer Key to help you.

    Note:  1st quarter ends 9 November 2023.
